This reminds me of Rebecca Solnit’s classic essay “Men Explain Things to Me” in which she recounts going to a party where a man, hearing she has written a book on an early photographer, tells her she must read the latest book on the subject and quotes her own book back to her!!! She’s so steeped in our misogynistic culture that for some moments, she wonders if she’s possibly missed an important book on the topic!!! Discussion of this essay spawned the term “mansplaining.” It’s sad and infuriating to be treated as inferior based on gender (or race, or sexual orientation, etc.) and like you say, it’s moronic to do that to other people. Grrr…
