This is such an interesting question which never occurred to me before. Mary is so poorly described in the Bible. Not that I'm a scholar, but I did go to Catechism until about 3rd grade and took a class on the Bible in college. She's basically just Jesus' mother. You learn nothing more about her. No wonder right wing evangelicals want to reduce women to babymaking machines. But also, Mary is revered in so many communities, because people want women-centered theology. Before the patriarchal religions, there were matriarchal ones. We want and need women at the center, and placing them there makes sense, and would vastly improve our over masculinized world.
