Thank you for another heartfelt piece, Catherine. Like you, I have a personal interest in this issue, and I see that a mixture of strategies is needed to help those in need and also keep our communities healthy and safe. Your story surprises in that it's set in Canada. I assumed universal healthcare would create better conditions there. But it sounds like you are facing the same problems we face here in San Francisco--homelessness, lack of mental health treatment, and public drug use. I'm a smart woman and have devoted a lot of thought to these issues, but still can't figure it out. My son, who has a major mental illness, is currently housed, but his landlord wants him to leave because he keeps causing trouble when he neglects to take his meds or uses street drugs that counteract them. I don't know what will happen next, but I'm frightened. So is he, which worsens his condition. :(
