My sister was depressed for most of her life and then, in her 60s, became much happier. I asked her what had happened. She said she'd been watching a TV show about two sisters who were horribly abused as children. One grew up to be a drug addict. The other was essentially okay. She realized the difference was the addict was always looking at the past, and the happier sister was always looking toward the future. Since then she's made a conscious effort to direct her attention forward. I think this is magic key. It sure was for my sister, anyway.
