My older sister Bonnie lives in co-op housing in Oakland, CA and couldn’t be happier. It’s not all older people, though. There are babies and teens and adults, too. Each family has their own apartment, which they buy like a condo, and they also have a common room with a kitchen and a common garden and guest room they can sign up for if visitors are coming. They eat dinner together in the common room twice a week, if they want to. You sign up if you want to eat. You also have to cook for everyone as part of a two-person team once every six weeks. The founding group got together and bought a historic building — Swan’s Market — then hired an architect to adapt it to their needs. Bonnie bought in later. It’s a great living situation that really works for her and her husband. :)
