I loved the book, and wrote a review of it last year (link below). The HBO series is really good, too, but of course not quite as good as the book. What I like most about the series is seeing the inventive theater costumes. They're fantastic! The costume designer must have had a ball. Like you, I also love seeing the theater folk survive. It's a much better vision of "after the apocalypse" than just big bullies everywhere, because it's true. Of course there will be artists among the random survivors! And they *could* be cherished. Because, like the line on the side of the traveling van says, "Survival is Insufficient." That's a line from Star Trek, btw, which is another thing I love about the book--the mix of high and "low" art, Shakespeare and Star Trek, symphonies and comic books. I'm really enjoying the HBO series and always enjoy your reviews. Here's mine:
