I love this idea of allowing non-traditional families to adopt children. What's the down side? As long as they are screened for psychological problems, any combination of caring adults could make a good home (or homes) for a child. The nuclear family has many flaws, and it's short-sighted to think only that "traditional" structure (which is quite new in the course of human history) is healthy for children.
