…tural moment where every single piece of media featuring women is hailed as a feminist masterpiece. Take last year’s box office hit Hustlers, a film that was treated as revelatory for showing that strippers can have brains. Hustlers was beyond cheesy, thematically heavy-handed, and emotionally underdeveloped, yet critics heralded it as a “profound” and “deeply feminist film.”
I found very little to like in this movie. I already knew that strippers were human beings. Duh! The men, although arrogant, weren’t particularly evil and didn’t deserve to be conned, and the women just spent the money they stole on fur coats and shoes! How is that feminist?
