Hahahah! My favorite story about this phenomena was in Rebecca Solnit's term-creating essay "Men Explain Things to Me." She tells how she had just written a book about a famous photographer when she went to a party and a man there started asking if she'd read an important book about him. He was quoting her book back to her! (Having not actually read it.) And she didn't realize it at first, because she was so socialized into playing the polite "female" role of listener. Unbelievable!
